"The Evolution of Fish II"

$90.00

The Evolution of Fish II is a watercolor painting I created in 1990, following a detailed pencil study completed in 1989 while at Boise State University. One sunny fall afternoon, as I was walking home from a class, inspiration struck me unexpectedly. I noticed a striking red fire plug standing out vividly in the green grass, surrounded by vibrant orange and yellow fallen leaves, all set against bright white clouds scattered across a brilliant blue sky. The scene was so captivating that it practically begged to be captured on paper. Better yet, I suddenly envisioned fierce-looking steelhead trout swimming gracefully through the air around the plug, in a completely foreign yet natural appearing setting. The steelhead became a hybrid of Chinook salmon and rainbow trout, when I realized that the title of this HAD to be The Evolution of Fish.

This painting remains one of my favorites because of its rich, full palette of colors and its intriguing surreal quality that invites viewers to see the familiar in an entirely new light. I also like that the water that these fish once used to inhabit is right there!

Artwork measures 18” x 27”
