The Pacific madrone (or Madrona or Madroño) tree is unique to the Pacific coastline, growing from California all the way up to British Columbia, Canada. It’s a flowering and berry (The Spanish called it the “Strawberry tree”) producing tree that is an important food source for birds, honeybees, and in the past, for humans.
Years ago, I collected some Madrona driftwood when fishing on the coast, and decided that the soft gray colored, yet hard and salty wood should make a beautiful rune set. It truly did! I made another set from some cut branches I had found while crab fishing in Puget Sound. I colored this set purplish with blackberries I found nearby.
This coming year, I will be returning to the coast to collect enough Madrona to make multiple sets, as well as Madrona berries to color them with.
