"Life as a Kite"
On a windy late spring day in 2017, while working on top of the 7th floor of a construction site in Reno, Nevada, I found myself daydreaming about flying away from it all. I even spread my arms wide and pictured myself rising above the building, soaring high into the clouds. Some days, those thoughts still come to me, but I know that like the kite, I am tethered. I imagine myself flying freely, but I always feel the invisible strings pulling me back to the earth, grounding me in reality.
This piece is the second pen drawing I created as a way to “get into Phase B” of my life- that of the artist. After feeling successful with my earlier John Wayne drawing, I was confident that yes—it was time.
For this particular drawing, I experimented with a technique where I tried to keep my pen connected to the paper as long as possible, using continuous scribbling. In doing so, I aimed to capture the feeling of being simultaneously tethered and free flowing, reflecting the tension and movement that inspired the artwork.
Artwork measures 11” x 14”
