As my wife and I drove through Arizona’s stunning Oak Creek Canyon towards Sedona in 2023, I asked her to take several photos of this rocky, sunlit, and shaded cliff mountainside, hoping to capture potential artwork material. Later, when I reviewed the images, I noticed that the interplay of light and shadows was creating faces within the rock formations!
This discovery instantly inspired me to create an entire cliff face composed of both obvious and hidden Native American faces. Some of these faces were based on historical published photos, while a few others “appeared” spontaneously as I sketched, and I accentuated their features. I never took the time to count how many faces are in this drawing, but that’s part of the fun—are you seeing a face I deliberately drew, or did it simply appear to you? I cleverly hid some faces, making them a challenge to spot. How many can you find?
