Crossing Bridges

$90.00

There were a number of reasons I created this watercolor painting (enhanced with ink stippling) of the Monroe Street Bridge in Spokane, Washington. First and foremost, I wanted to share a moment from my past that I am proud of. In 2005 during its extensive renovation, I was a “form setter carpenter” on this fascinating project, and I offered valuable advice on how to form the sloping negative radii on the 4 pavilions (the small structure at the top, as depicted in the painting). As reward for my input, I was honored with the responsibility of taking the lead on forming them, or at least, the first of them.

Over time, having contributed to the construction of around four bridges in total, I came to realize that bridges serve a much deeper and more meaningful purpose than merely enabling people to cross a natural barrier. They facilitate freedom of movement, providing vital connections between communities and individuals.

My wife’s youngest son had been wishing for years for me to create a drawing of this particular bridge for him. Remembering that connections are the very essence of what bridges represent, I undertook this painting as a special project dedicated to him.
