From the days that I first learned about the Runes (by reading JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings in 1981 or ’82), I have been deeply captivated by their enduring mystery and profound significance. The ancient Scandinavian peoples, including the Norse and various Germanic tribes, used these symbols as much more than just a simple alphabet for spelling words or basic communication. Each rune carries meanings that go far beyond the mere representation of phonetic sounds—they are rich symbols embodying fundamental aspects of life itself. These runes were considered a sacred connection to the spiritual source, and many believed they held magical properties.

The oracles and seers of those times could “read” these runes not only to foretell future events but also to gain profound insight into the unseen forces influencing their lives and the broader world around them.

In 2023, I made the decision to undertake a major themed project inspired by a vivid dream: to draw each of the runes as they were historically visualized or through my own artistic vision. These large 15×20” rune drawings require an intense amount of time, patience, and attention—to complete one typically takes on average between 60 to 80 hours of focused work. This meant that I had to be prepared for my project to take over two years of diligent effort to bring each one to completion with the care it deserves.

As of now, I have completed and scanned 12 of the 24 runes, preparing them for high-quality Giclée fine art prints.

Interestingly, my creative process often involves pulling a rune at random to decide which one I will draw next, which keeps the project feeling dynamic and connected to the ancient practice of rune casting.
